Agree that 'theory left' ideologues are a pain but I think they have much less impact than you suggest. The shift among Democrats hasn't been primarily towards Theory Leftists but away from working people and toward the donor class...what would have been called Lindsay Republicans 50 years ago. Clinton was basically the last liberal Republican president. Similar, statistically the major stress on the family is economics not someone else's ideology and the family has mostly fractured under economic stress and the disappearance of good jobs. I like where you're going but I think you're missing two components: 50 years of immiseration and, second, the way economic misery is being exploited to fuel culture wars that aim outrage at the wrong target.
