The intertwinement of religion and politics is often cited as the reason that so few folks are religious in Western Europe...something like 3% claiming it as a source of meaning vs 15% in the US. I think we're following the same path.

Both Pew Research and PRRI have done some digging into the underlying numbers both in the US and in Europe recently. Happy to dig out sources if you want.

One thing that jumped out at me about the increase in Evangelicals is that the growth is in a block of people that identify as Evangelicals but don't actually go to church!

So at this point, right you are, it's basically political not spiritual. Always good to have God on your side. Saves having to deal with a lot of nuance.
