One thing I've noticed about Trump is that he enabled meanness. Much to the relief of the mean:-) Imho, a lot of the opposition to 'political correctness' is defending the right to make people feel bad.
Empathy and atrocity have been long time obsessions of mine. I think they're rooted in our evolutionary history and coded into our biochemistry. I suggest at least watching the Sapolsky video. It's right near the start. Sapolsky is deep into neurochemistry and a primatologist specializing in baboons.
